Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion

Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) in the Collaborative

The Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) component of the project is designed to promote equity and inclusivity across all aspects of implementation. This commitment ensures that every stakeholder—project personnel, partners, students, and beneficiaries—is actively included and empowered.

Our Approach

We integrate GEDSI principles into the project through the following key avenues:

  1. Training and Capacity Building
Equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge to thrive in inclusive environments.
  2. Networking
Creating platforms for collaboration and knowledge exchange among diverse groups.
  3. Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Supporting inclusive business models and climate-smart innovations.
  4. Research and Training
Advancing studies that address equity and inclusion in climate resilience and sustainability.

Advancing Equity: A Look Back at Year 1 Progress in Gender, Disability, and Social Inclusion

As we close the first year of our project, the Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) team is proud to share a progress report highlighting key achievements and learnings from the third and fourth quarters. Our ongoing mission is to weave equity and inclusivity into the very fabric of the project, ensuring that our personnel, partners, students, and all beneficiaries can participate fully and fairly.

Here’s a summary of what we have accomplished and what we’ve learned along the way.

Key Milestones Achieved (Quarters 3 & 4)

1. Development of GEDSI and Safeguarding Guidelines
A significant step forward this year was the creation of comprehensive GEDSI and Safeguarding Guidelines.

  • A complete draft has been developed and shared with technical team leads for their feedback.
  • Preparations are now underway for a final validation workshop scheduled for August 26, 2025.
  • Following validation, the guidelines will be formally adopted, and a team-wide orientation is planned for the start of Year 2.

2. GEDSI-Responsive Recruitment & Sensitization
We have successfully embedded GEDSI principles into our core hiring processes to build a more diverse and inclusive team.

  • Provided active support during fellowship calls and interview sessions across all categories to ensure inclusivity.
  • Fully integrated GEDSI protocols into the project’s recruitment activities, setting a strong foundation for future hiring.

3. Stakeholder Engagement and Capacity Building
Our team has been actively involved in project-wide events and capacity-building initiatives.

  • World Environment Day: Participated in commemoration activities.
  • Research Labs Workshop: Attended the Stakeholder Engagement Workshop, providing on-the-ground GEDSI support.
  • Safeguarding Arbitration: Currently handling a referred arbitration process to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all.
  • Collaboration: Fostered a strong collaborative relationship with the Centre for Disability Studies and Advocacy (CEDSA).

4. Supporting the Academic Gap Assessment
We played a supportive role in the important gap assessment of climate-related academic programmes.

  • Assisted the Training and Capacity Building team in validating and consulting on the assessment.
  • Provided crucial data and key actor perspectives to the appointed consultant to ensure the assessment was informed by diverse viewpoints.

An Ongoing Focus: The GEDSI Gap Assessment

A key initiative for Year 1 was the GEDSI Gap Assessment of climate-related academic programmes. While significant groundwork has been laid—including compiling climate courses, selecting a consultant through a competitive process, and finalizing the contract—the actual assessment has not yet commenced. This deliverable, initially expected for completion in Year 1, has been carried over, and we are focused on ensuring it begins promptly in the new year.

Reflections and the Path Forward

Our first year has been a period of significant foundation-laying, accompanied by valuable lessons that will guide our work in Year 2.

Key Lessons Learned:

  • Proactive Communication is Critical: Seamless GEDSI integration requires continuous and early engagement with all project teams.
  • Plan Support Services Early: The early recruitment and onboarding of external consultants or support staff is essential to align with tight project timelines.

As we move into Year 2, we are energized by the progress made and are equipped with clearer insights to deepen our impact. We remain committed to ensuring that gender equality, disability inclusion, and social equity are not just checkboxes, but core principles that drive the success and sustainability of our project.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this important journey!
