Pioneering Solutions for a Resilient Future: The Work of Our Climate Research Labs
In the face of a changing climate, actionable science is our most powerful tool. The Climate Research Labs initiative is at the forefront of this effort, serving as a dynamic hub for interdisciplinary research designed to build resilience across communities, ecosystems, and governance systems in Ghana and West Africa. We don't just study the climate; we empower communities, inform policy, and co-create practical solutions for a sustainable future.
Our work is built on three core pillars:
- Catalyzing Innovation: Funding and supporting cutting-edge research through grants and collaborative projects.
- Building Infrastructure: Establishing a network of climate observatories to gather critical, localized data.
- Fostering Collaboration: Bridging the gap between academia, government, local communities, and Indigenous knowledge holders.
A Year in Review: Building a Foundation for Impact (Q3-Q4 2025)
The latter half of our first operational year was marked by significant progress, laying a strong foundation for the work to come.
Key Milestones from Our First Year
1. Launching the Climate Research Catalyst Grants
We launched our flagship funding initiative to spark innovation, disseminating a call for proposals that attracted a strong response from the research community. We received 57 high-quality applications across thematic areas like Population/Health Resilience, Natural/Built Environment, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems. An independent evaluation panel has completed its assessment, and the final selection of awardees is imminent.
2. Establishing a National Network of Climate Observatories
To ground our research in local reality, we have made substantial progress in establishing climate observatories across Ghana. We are formalizing partnerships through Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with key institutions in the Northern Belt (e.g., Navrongo Health Research Centre), Middle Belt (e.g., Kintampo Health Research Centre), and Coastal Belt (e.g., Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience).
3. Enriching Our Framework Through Collaboration
A successful Stakeholder Engagement Workshop brought together 51 participants from academia, NGOs, and other sectors. Their interdisciplinary insights were directly incorporated into our revised research conceptual framework. We are also establishing a Climate Futures Action Group to ensure ongoing community engagement and idea generation.
The Road Ahead: An Ambitious Plan for Year Two
With our foundation firmly in place, Year Two is dedicated to translation and action. Our plan focuses on deep research, technological empowerment, and direct policy engagement.
Overarching Themes for the Year:
- Implementing Catalyst Research: Executing the funded research projects throughout all four quarters.
- Deploying Advanced Technology: Investing in specialized software and drones to enhance our analytical capabilities.
- Expanding Fieldwork: Systematically conducting household surveys, focus groups, and establishing experimental farms.
- Driving Policy Impact: Ensuring our findings reach and influence decision-makers.
A Glimpse at Our Year-Two Roadmap:
- Quarter One (Q1): We hit the ground running by initiating Catalyst Grant research, procuring essential software (like
Calroadfor pollution tracking andSimaprofor lifecycle analysis), drones, and beginning household surveys. - Quarter Two (Q2): Focus shifts to action in the field: equipping observatories, renovating training facilities in Ejura, setting up experimental farms, and hiring Research Assistants.
- Quarter Three (Q3): A period of intensive monitoring and synthesis through quarterly and monthly progress meetings to track all projects.
- Quarter Four (Q4): We will culminate the year by organizing a major Multi-Level Government and Policy Engagement event to ensure our research directly informs public policy.
Learning and Growing Together
Our journey has already yielded invaluable lessons. We've confirmed that the most powerful solutions arise from collaboration, not working in isolation. By partnering with researchers already established in the field and harnessing diverse expertise, we are building a truly resilient and interdisciplinary research model.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all our partners, stakeholders, and team members. The foundation is set for a period of transformative discovery. Follow our journey as we move into an exciting Year Two of implementation, discovery, and tangible impact.
