Project Director's Welcome Message

Professor Gordon A. Awandare
Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs
Project Director, Africa Climate Collaborative Project at the University of Ghana

Welcome to the Africa Climate Collaborative Project at the University of Ghana. I am delighted to extend warm greetings to all students, researchers, partners, and visitors engaging with our work.

As a scientist, educator, and leader, my career has been centered on building research excellence and strengthening Africa’s scientific capacity. From my early academic journey at the University of Ghana, through my doctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh and postdoctoral fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Institute for Research, to my return home as a Lecturer in 2002, I have been guided by a deep belief in Africa’s potential to solve its own challenges.

My work establishing the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) and leading it to secure more than $40 million in competitive grants has demonstrated what African institutions can achieve with vision, dedication, and collaboration. Through these efforts, we have trained hundreds of African scientists at the Master’s, PhD, and postdoctoral levels and contributed significantly to infectious disease research, including leading Ghana’s genomic surveillance efforts during the COVID‑19 pandemic.

The Africa Climate Collaborative Project at the University of Ghana builds on this legacy. It is designed to become a hub of excellence advancing impactful research, supporting climate resilience, and nurturing the next generation of African scholars. With the support of the Mastercard Foundation and the dedication of our partners, we are positioning Ghana and the University of Ghana as leaders in climate innovation on the continent.

At the Africa Climate Collaborative Project at the University of Ghana, your success is our success. We are committed to enriching the student experience, fostering strong research culture, and ensuring the well‑being of our community. We will continue to strengthen partnerships—locally and globally—while mobilizing resources and expertise to expand our reach and impact.

The future of the Africa Climate Collaborative Project at the University of Ghana is bright. Together, we will shape it into a global centre of excellence, contributing solutions that safeguard our environment, advance climate justice, and support sustainable development across Africa.

May God bless us all, and bless the Africa Climate Collaborative Project at the University of Ghana.
